I was beginning to think we were going to get away with a storm-free August & September, but what would we do without a little weather drama to close out the summer. While this storm (hopefully) is just rain with some moderate winds, we’ve got a full guide of holistic hurricane prep suggestions ready for action and to ensure we’re ready for the remainder of hurricane season.

Wishing us all an uneventful week with the bonus of rain - shoutout to all of our hard-working farmers and gardeners who deserve all the rain and much more.

If you have been waiting for a reason to try out a local meat producer, now is a great time to support their work and to show the powers that be what we all care about (if you’re interested in this topic, pop down to our “The Week in Wellness” section for more. Have a great week!

Trump officially signed the tariff cut on Aug. 26. It's now finalized, not just announced, and takes effect Sept. 1. The White House also lifted a more-than-year-long ban on Mexican cattle imports (put in place over a screwworm outbreak) as part of the same push.

Newest developments:

  • The cattle industry is pushing back hard. National Cattlemen's Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall said the group is "disappointed," and rancher groups like R-CALF say it undercuts American producers with no guarantee shoppers will actually see lower prices.

  • Experts are skeptical it'll matter much for your grocery bill. NPR reports economists estimate the typical saving works out to around $15/year for the average consumer (roughly a 25-cent per pound dip).

  • Context on why prices are so high right now. Ground beef is averaging $6.88-6.89/lb, up over 25% since 2024; the U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest size in about 75 years due to drought and high feed costs. Tyson Foods recently closed two beef plants (2,500+ layoffs) and says prices likely won't recover until 2027.

  • Politically, this is landing right before the November midterms, with food affordability a flashpoint for both parties.

  • Heads up: Imported beef trimmings (often from Australia, Brazil, and Argentina) get blended into ground beef and it's not always obvious on the label. Other countries have different food safety standards than the US, so if you want to know your beef is 100% American-raised, look for the 'Product of USA' label.

We have a full round-up of local farms and CSAs where you can source your beef and know exactly where it came from!
