There’s a reason sourdough has become such a wellness (and foodie) favorite. Thanks to natural fermentation, it’s often easier to digest, helps your body better absorb nutrients, and can keep you full longer than regular bread. Plus—it’s endlessly versatile. From a warm slice with butter, to sandwich bread, tortillas, pizza dough, and even pancakes—sourdough is one of those staples that can show up at almost every meal.

This week I caught up with my friend Chelsea, the woman behind Sourdoha HTX, who is teaching Houstonians how to bring this timeless craft into their own kitchens. Chelsea.

Chelsea taught me how to make sourdough almost two years ago and it’s been one of the most fun (and resourceful) things I’ve learned in my adult life. There are endless ways to use it and to gift it… all with the additional health benefits. I haven’t baked much this summer and my family is begging me to get back to it and with soup season around the corner, the starter is coming back out this week.

Q: Why did you start making sourdough?

Chelsea: I learned that the fermentation process allows your body to absorb nutrients more easily and not metabolize the bread as a starch. Plus—I love warm bread with butter.

Q: What’s the story behind Sourdoha HTX?

Chelsea: My sourdough journey started while we were living in Doha, Qatar, where I perfected my craft and even ran a microbakery. When we moved back to Houston due to my husband’s ALS diagnosis, I knew I wouldn’t have the bandwidth to sell bread anymore. But baking remained my favorite way to say “thank you”—whether for teachers, coaches, or friends. After so many people asked if I’d sell my loaves, I decided instead to teach. Sharing this craft brings me so much joy, especially knowing others can make a healthy homemade food to share with their own families.

Q: What’s your favorite health benefit of sourdough?

Chelsea: The fermentation! It helps my body actually absorb the fiber and nutrients—and it keeps me full way longer than regular bread.

Q: What’s the best part of teaching sourdough?

Chelsea: Seeing the joy when someone realizes, “I can do this!” Then getting texts later with photos of their beautiful loaves—it’s the best.

Q: Favorite Houston health spot or health hack?

Chelsea: Easy—Della Coffee’s sourdough tortilla breakfast tacos.
