In Houston, fall weekends come with a pretty predictable soundtrack: college football on Saturday, the Texans on Sunday, and somebody asking what we're eating before the first commercial break.
Whether you're setting up a Texans tailgate or watching from the couch, game day food is part of the fun. Wings should still taste like wings, nachos should still require at least a few napkins, and nobody wants to show up to a tailgate with a tray of vegetables and announce that they're the nachos now.
The good news? A healthier game day doesn't require an entirely different menu. A few upgrades to what's on the table, or in your cooler, can go a long way without making football season feel like one long exercise in saying no.
Healthy Game Day Food in Houston (Without Losing the Fun)
You don't need to reinvent the snack table. The best healthy game day snacks aren't necessarily different foods—they're often the foods everyone already wants to eat with a few changes where they actually make sense.
Make the Wings. Just Skip the Fryer.
Chicken wings don't need a deep fryer to get crispy. Pat them dry, season them well and bake them on a wire rack at high heat or toss them in the air fryer. Once they're crisp, add Buffalo sauce, BBQ or whatever your house considers the official game-day flavor.
Serve them with the usual carrots and celery, and if you want to lighten up the dip, swap some or all of the sour cream or mayo in ranch for plain Greek yogurt.
Still wings. Still messy. Still require too many napkins.
Load More Than Cheese Onto the Nachos.
Instead of building a mountain of chips with a little protein somewhere underneath, spread tortilla chips in a single layer on a sheet pan and load them with shredded chicken or lean ground beef, black beans, peppers and cheese.
Once they're out of the oven, pile on pico de gallo, jalapeños, avocado, cilantro or Greek yogurt in place of sour cream.
You're not replacing nachos. You're just giving the good stuff a little more real estate.
Give Buffalo Chicken Dip a Protein Boost.
Buffalo chicken dip already starts with chicken, so it doesn't take much to nudge this one in a more filling direction. Use plenty of shredded chicken and replace part of the cream cheese with blended cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt. Add Buffalo sauce, a little cheese and your favorite seasonings, then bake until bubbly.
Put tortilla chips and crunchy vegetables beside it and let everyone decide what they're dipping.
That's really the philosophy for the whole spread: add choices instead of taking everything away. Put fruit beside the chips. Add protein to the dip. Keep cold water as easy to grab as everything else in the cooler. Nobody needs a lecture about it.
Best Places to Watch the Game in Houston
Sometimes the healthiest game-day decision is deciding you're absolutely not cleaning your kitchen afterward.
Houston has plenty of places to catch a game, but these two give you a little more flexibility depending on what “healthier” looks like for you.
On The Kirb: For When You Still Want the Sports Bar
If “healthy sports bar” sounds a little like an oxymoron, On The Kirb would like a word.
The Houston concept bills itself as an organic eatery and sports bar, so the menu still looks appropriately football-friendly: wings, nachos, burgers, pizza and tacos are all accounted for. The difference is that there are plenty of ways to order them alongside ingredients you don't usually associate with sports-bar food.
The wings are made with organic chicken and can be baked instead of fried. Burgers use organic, grass-fed beef and can be ordered with a lettuce bun. You'll also find wild-caught fish tacos, substantial salads and entrées like organic chicken or salmon served with asparagus and quinoa. Even fried sides can be upgraded to beef tallow if that's your preference.
In other words, you can make game day as sensible—or as cheesy—as you want it.
What we'd order: Baked Buffalo wings for the table, followed by a Greek Salmon Salad or Kirb Burger in a lettuce wrap. And yes, someone should probably still order the queso.
Patterson Park: For a Game Day With a Little Fresh Air
You don't have to spend four quarters planted inside a dark sports bar.
Patterson Park sits right off the White Oak Bayou Trail in the Heights, with a multi-level indoor/outdoor setup, more than 40 TVs and game audio. It actively leans into college and professional football season, but the treehouse-style patio gives you a little more breathing room than the average watch party.
If you want to work some movement into the day, bike there and you'll get 10% off your tab. It's also dog-friendly and smoke-free, and kids are welcome until 9 p.m.
The food is decidedly game-day food; wings, sliders, queso, and waffle fries rather than grain bowls and green juice. But that's okay. Patterson Park earns its spot here because you can bike the bayou, watch the game outside, and still order the wings when you get there.
It also has a surprisingly good non-alcoholic beer selection, which brings us to the cooler.
Going Dry-ish? There's a Beer for That.
Non-alcoholic beer has come a long way from being the lonely six-pack nobody touches at the cookout.
Whether you're skipping alcohol altogether or just alternating throughout a long football Saturday, Houston's non-alcoholic beer options have gotten a lot more interesting. There are plenty of choices that still feel right at home beside the wings.
Athletic Brewing: For the IPA Drinker
If giving up the beer part of game day sounds harder than giving up the alcohol, Athletic Brewing is an easy place to start.
The brewery specializes in non-alcoholic beer under 0.5% ABV and makes styles ranging from goldens to darks and sours. For IPA drinkers, Run Wild IPA and Free Wave Hazy IPA are the two we'd put in the game-day cooler.
Athletic is also easy to find around Houston, but there's a more fun way to figure out which style you like. Second Draught currently carries six Athletic NA beers, including Lite, Upside Dawn, Cerveza, Run Wild, Free Wave, and Fruited Fields.
Just don't save that tasting trip for Sunday kickoff: Second Draught's current taproom hours run Monday through Friday.
Heineken 0.0: For the Lager Drinker
If you're not interested in turning your NA beer purchase into a research project, Heineken 0.0 is the familiar option.
It's an especially easy transition if regular Heineken is already your kind of beer, and it's widely available enough that you shouldn't have to make a special trip to track it down.
Watching the game at Patterson Park instead? It's currently on the menu there, too.
Guinness 0.0: For the Dark-Beer Crowd
Not everyone wants an IPA or light lager on game day.
Guinness 0.0 gives stout drinkers an NA option with the dark, roasted character they're actually looking for instead of asking them to settle for whatever alcohol-free lager happened to be in stock.
Patterson Park currently carries this one as well, making it another easy option if your group includes people drinking both regular and non-alcoholic beer.
Best Day Brewing: For Something Different
If you've already worked your way through the most familiar NA brands, Best Day Brewing is another one worth putting on your radar. The brewery makes several non-alcoholic styles, giving you another option when you want something beyond the usual lager.
Look for it alongside Athletic, Heineken 0.0 and Guinness 0.0 at Houston-area beer and grocery retailers when you're stocking the cooler.
The Fourth Quarter
A healthy game day doesn't need a separate menu, a sad plate of celery or a promise that you'll “be good” tomorrow.
Make the wings. Load some protein onto the nachos. Bike to the bar if the weather cooperates. Crack an NA beer if that's what sounds good or have the regular one if that's what you want. The goal isn't to make football season perfectly healthy. It's to find a few choices that leave you feeling good without taking the fun out of it.
